Low Maintenance Gravel Garden

Weeding, gravelling and low maintenance shrub planting to tidy and soften side return area. For further updates see Instagram: @thepengegardener.

Here I had already removed the tallest weeds…

Physocarpus and Grisellinia.

Juniperus and Pittosporum by greenhouse.

Grisellinia by back door.

Osmanthus and Viburnum from side gate.

I softened up a previously neglected side return with low maintenance drought tolerant shrubs including Grisellinia littoralis, Pittosporum ‘Tom Thumb’ and Juniperus squamata. The first stage was thorough weeding, laying pea gravel and permeable membrane then 20-30 mm slate chips on top. Then planting was done cutting into the membrane and adding grit and compost to the rubble filled borders. Other plants used were Viburnum Bodnantense ‘Dawn’,Osmanthus heterophyllus and Physocarpus Diablo.

I also planted Brunnera Jack Frost, Vinca major and minor, and Pulmonaria in the shady border by the lawn I turfed in September.
