Low Maintenance Planting for Sloping Terrace

Low maintenance, drought tolerant shrub planting in harmony with trees and bright backdrop.

View from left, including eucalyptus.

This area required a specific look as the backdrop is a large red, black and white building, and the client wanted low maintenance, drought tolerant planting. Everything had to be in harmony with the two large cordylines, plus eucalyptus, broom and red phormium already in situ.

I used a mixture of sedges and shrubs for structure including Osmanthus heterophyllus, Pittosporum Golf Ball, Santolina and Escallonia Pink Elle, with Astelia, Libertia and Carex Everest. The scheme was marked at each end with peach Chaenomeles, and two Juniperus were also included as there was already one behind the eucalyptus.

I tried to mix cool blues and warm greens and used a warm yellow to echo the Phormium red, and the Trachycarpus palm is an effective central feature next to the fluffy broom.
